V introduced me to the inimitable Jimmy Castor a few years ago. Actually, his brother Anthony ‘Juggie’ Rose did. This was playing in his car one afternoon and I couldn’t get enough! The sheer bravado of it!

It turns out Juggie had done V the same favour back in the ’70s. And boy are we grateful! This one is for you, Juggie.

Unlike V, I didn’t hear much Patsy Cline growing up (thank God ;)) but I heard more than enough of this amazing lady. My father loved her … and so do I. Just listen to that voice! They say that Sarah Vaughan could have been a classical singer if she wanted. Her range and mastery were out of this world!

In this video she sounds young and innocent. Her voice took on a deeper, more resonant quality later on. I love her either way! 

V’s earliest memory of music is of him sitting on the floor and putting his ear to the radiogram’s speaker as this played. Every day, he says, his aunt had a rendezvous with Patsy Cline.
